Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the project is to address specifically the issue of the variability in Charpy toughness for thermo-mechanically processed high strength structural steel. The team from Birmingham and Sheffield Universities comprises expertise spanning modelling of processing, finite element modelling of properties in structural steels, micro-modelling of cleavage and ductile fracture, notched bar fracture mechanics, and neuro-fuzzy hybrid modelling. The first purpose is to increase the knowledge base in terms of scientific understanding of properties resulting from metals processing. Strong industrial links enhance the second purpose, creation of a model to be used by manufacturing industry in a predictive manner to determine toughness produced for given steel composition and process conditions. More ambitiously, the model could be used in a reverse mode to facilitate the design of a steel and its microstructure to produce a specified toughness via manipulation of the steel composition and process variables.
