The extremely high flux available for Small Angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) at the third-generation synchrotron x-ray source at the Argonne National Laboratory enables hitherto real-time experiments to be performed. In particular it is proposed to use the SAXS instrument to monitor the highly dynamic process of pore development in carbons under gasifying conditions. Professor J Calo of Brown University has agreed to help with data handling on the project and Dr R. Winans of the Argonne National Laboratory has also agreed to help with the experiments and to provide beam time. The proposed work is for a one-year project to investigate the following systems:1. Microporous carbons gasified at different times in O22. Microporous carbons gasified at similar rates in different oxidising agents and loaded with different catalysts3. Carbons with wide pore size distributions gasified in O2 and NOThe overall objective is to obtain a better understanding of the relationships between original pore structure, chemical and mass control and pore development in the above systems to determine the equivalent of a Theile modulus for carbon gasification. Neutron scattering will also be performed.
