Summary on Grant Application Form
In this project we will research into the use of highly chiral polymer alignment interfaces for novel ferroelectric and flexoelectric liquid crystals. We will examine these 'in situ' polymer systems in three modes, a) photocrosslinked, b) photonically aligned and c) photoecthed. Through control of deposition and processing we will control the surface of nanometric chiral alignment layer that is fundamental to the operation of the liquid crystal devices. We will use the asymmetric anchoring energies to produce self-alignment and critically evaluate the performance of the Electro-optic devices including displays and molecular mirrors.
