Summary on Grant Application Form
We request funding for an ambitious and wide-ranging research programme on quantum phenomena in semiconductor structures. Key topics include: carrier interaction effects probed by tunnelling spectroscopy; superlattice miniband conduction and quantum chaology; ballistic transport of negative effect mass holes; non-linear QHE breakdown; enhanced quantum coherence by suppressed phonon scattering; quantum dot spectral hole burning; quantum dot spectroscopy; electron motion in spatially inhomogeneous magnetic fields. The programme will be supported by theory and modelling. Our programme requires 120 MBE layers/pa, which represents approximately 60% of the total output of the MBE machine. We also request funds for the salaries of staff who work within the MBE Unit and for some items for equipment. As described in detail in the case for support, the level of support requested will allow us to continue to provide MBE layers for other in-house projects on phonon studies and spectroscopy, and for a large and active user group in UK universities and other UK and overseas laboratories.
