Summary on Grant Application Form
A multiple-tip scanning tunnelling microscope (MT-STM) will be developed using a combination of microfabrication techniques and a digital control system. A closely spaced array of individually contactable tips will be produced by plasma etching of a patterned silicon wafer. This tip array will be integrated into a computer-controlled stage that performs coarse approach, raster scanning and tilt-feedback positioning. Parallel STM measurements in constant current mode will be made possible by the use of a digital feedback circuit to keep different tips within tunnelling distance. The STM stage will be flexible enough to implement additional arrayed SPM probe technologies as desired.
