This proposal describes a research programme to be carried out in collaboration with DERA (Malvern) on the development of low birefringence ferroelectric liquid crystals necessary for (I) TFT-driven ferroelectric displays that require a cell spacing of 5 micrometres, and (ii) for conventional multiplex-driven ferroelectric displays using a cell spacing of 2 micrometres and operating in relective mode. In order to improve on the existing high quality TFT liquid crystal displays based on nematic technology, video-rate switching and an improved angle of view are essential requirements which ferroelectric technology can provide. This research programme will involve the synthesis and characterisation of novel materials that have the usual desirable properties (low melting point, wide smectic C phase range with smectic A and nematic phases above, low viscosity etc) and a low birefringence. The structures will, as far as possible, consist of various saturated ring systems, with either oxygens and lateral fluoro substituents being used to provide the necessary polarity for the generation of the tilted smectic C phase. Some known materials (host and dopants) will be sunthesised. Ferroelectric mixtures will be formulated and evaluated for mesomorphic behaviours and electroptic properties. Optimised mixtures will be evaluated in test devices.
