Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed work aims to address some issues of direct relevance to the assessment of chemical plant safety. The research will focus on the hazard identification phase and will aim to reduce the likelihood of accidents due to complex interactions on the plant, and to alleviate the need for over-design as a safety measure. The main goal is to generate a conservative yet realistic picture of the plant behaviour by making use of the most up-to-date quantitative information on the process. A novel modelling framework will be developed to account for uncertainty and nonlinearity in the process. New analysis tools will be brought to bear on the resulting model in order to answer a number of crucial questions in plant safety: what regions of the operating space lead to unsafe behaviour? What disturbances can be tolerated by the plant? Can safe behaviour be guaranteed for infinite time? Keywords describing areas of proposal.Chemical Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing, Safety, Hazard identification, Modelling, Uncertainty
