Summary Describe the proposed research in about 200 words.Ionic liquid technology has emerged, over the past decade, as one of the most exciting and innovati approaches to 'green' synthesis. This proposal, arising from a unique industrial consortium coveri almost all aspects of industrial chemistry, describes our intention to develop a pre-competitiveprogramme to establish the scope and technical feasibility of introducing ionic liquid technology i; industrial practice, using two demonstration projects. One of the key barriers to commercialisation ionic liquids is the sparcity of chemical engineering studies. The two demonstration studies are bas orthogonal areas of industrial interest, to prove the generic viability of catalytic processes basec ionic liquid technology. Each will be underpinned by background generic developments in characteris for chemical engineering (measurements of viscosity, density, heat capacity, separation, etc.), mode for predicting physical properties, and methodology for combinatorial testing procedures. QUB already has the largest multidisciplinary research group in the world centred on ionic liquid technology, an will provide an additional unique laboratory suite for QUILL, custom-designed to meet industrial nee this area. In particular, the QUILL Centre represents a liaison between chemistry and chemicalengineering, an essential pre-requisite for any research of this nature.
