Summary on Grant Application Form
A filter medium in a dead-end filter will be excited directly, giving direct coupling of the vibration force to the solids that control the properties of the filter cake formed (ie those solids deposited at the filter surface itself). We shall work over a wide range of frequencies, 5Hz to 100 kHz. A modelling effort will be mounted to describe the effect of the septum excitation and in this way to predict and control the process parameters. Part of the modelling involves obtaining an expression for the boundary condition relating the fluctuation of the solids motion, the solidosity and the mean fluid flow. This part involves direct simulation of the particle motion in the vicinity of the septum.
