The project will develop analytical tools for electrochemical noise emanating flow-assisted corrosion. A major concern of in-line corrosion monitors has been the inability to indicate real-time corrosion activity. The level of understanding for corrosion sensors or monitoring equipment needs to be improved, in order that in-line corrosion monitors can be correctly located. Recent interest was focused on the application of modern electrochemical techniques such as current and potential electrochemical noise measurements. The reliable interpretation of electrochemical noise is the major challenge to the advancement of this technology. This proposal will build on existing experience gained with stainless steels in static chloride solutions, utilising range of analysis procedures and a novel stochastic approach. These tools will be used to characterise the electrochemical current and potential noise obtained by imposed particular flow conditions to generate a range of flow-assisted corrosion conditions.
