Summary on Grant Application Form
The indolocarbazole alkaloids are a class of natural products with a remarkable range of biological activity but a general regioselective synthesis has not been developed. We will tackle the problem of passing information between the southern and northern districts of these molecules by studying bisindoylmaleimide cyclophanes; these cyclophanes are precursors of indolocarbazole alkaloids and the conformation of their macrocyclic ring will relay information between the remote districts. The synthesis, configurational stability and asymmetric reactions of bisindoylmaleimide cyclophanes will be studied and the methods developed will be applied to the synthesis of analogues and members of the indolocarbazole class of alkaloids.
