The research proposal falls into two separate sections: The first concerns an extension of previous work by Michael Stone on vortex dynamics in s-wave superconductors to the study of weakly disordered d-wave superconductors. Emphasis will be placed providing a more quantum mechanical description of the core state evolution appropriate in the d-wave environment. Our aim will be to tailor the analysis towards an investigation of the high temperature cuprate superconductors. The second project involves an extension of recent work by the principal investigator and co-workers on the dynamics of a quantum particles subject to a quenched random gauge field, to the consideration of dynamically fluctuating gauge fields. Here emphasis will be placed on the development of existing techniques tailored to the consideration of strong coupling gauge theories. This approach will be developed through specific applications including the low-energy dynamics of the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet, and the gauge theory of high temperature superconductors.
