Recent work by the proposers has used surface profiling and scratch displacement observations to establish the formation of localised deposition zones (LDZs) at grain boundaries transverse to the applied tensile stress under creep conditions at low stresses. Such LDZs (showing features also evident on superplastically formed samples) are not consistent with bulk grain deformation mechanisms such as Harper-Dorn or power law creep, but are entirely in accord with operation of diffusional creep as proposed by Nabarro, Herring and Coble. Such diffusive deposition (and corresponding depletion at grain boundaries aligned with the tensile stress) can result in fracture of barrier coatings at low overall strains under low stresses although the coating may survive the more homogenous deformation associated with dislocation creep at higher stresses. The overall aims of the proposed research are (i) to indentify and account for the conditions under which stress-directed vacancy flow gives rise to such localised removal or deposition at grain boundaries and (ii) to define the role of such localised deformation in high temperature processing (e.g. superplastic forming, hot isostatic pressing, sintering) and service (e.g. durability of barrier coatings at low stresses).
