Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to investigate systems in which substrates and gaseous reagents are transported dissolved in scCO2 into a catalytic reactor which contains a polar catalyst dissolved in an ionic liquid. The products will be transported from the reactor again dissolved in the scCO2 The involatility of the ionic liquid and the polar nature of the catalust (making it insoluble in scCO2) will mean that the catalyst and ionic liquid will remain in the reactor, whilst the relatively high solubility of even involatile substrates in scCO2, as well as the total miscibility of scCO2 with the gaseous reagents will provide an environmentally friendly solution to the problem of separation of the products from the catalyst and the solvent, which is often the downfall of promising reactions catalysed in homogeneous systems.
