Concern is growing about particulates in the environment. Because of this and increasing legislation here is a need to continuously monitor furnace stacks. Existing in situ monitors measure mass throughput but fail to measure size. This project aims to measure both by a light scattering techn: which will be insensitive to window contamination. Particles in the duct will pass through a laser cream and be imaged onto a grid with a square function transmissivity, and the light will pass to a photodetector. Particles in the size range 10 - 20 um will be sized from the ratio of the widths o: peaks and troughs in the signal. The signal height will be recorded simultaneously to act as a calibration to allow for window contamination. Smaller particles will then be sized from the scat intensity. The frequency of the signal will yield velocity, and so volumetric throughput as a function of size will be obtained. In the final stages proving trials will be conducted on an industrial test rig and an extension to larger will be examined. At the end of the project the basic requirements the design of a practical instrument will have been established.
