|
The emergence of ubiquitous wireless networking and information appliances has led to the development of a significant number of device interaction technologies, e.g. Jini, HAVi and SLP. These technologies allow users who roam between networks to discover services in their environment and interact with them. Each technology is designed to offer its own unique advantages and facilities within a given application context. As a consequence, it is unlikely that one particular technology will become dominant and hence systems will be required to operate in heterogeneous environments. The aim of this project is to develop comprehensive support for service location and discovery in such heterogeneous environments. In more detail, the proposed project will develop a unified model of service location and description that can be mapped onto the full range of existing and emerging device interaction technologies. Uniquely, the project will address the demanding issues of interoperability, ubiquitous service interaction and scalability in heterogeneous device interaction environments. The results of the project will be an architecture for integrating existing and future device interaction technologies coupled with a proof of concept demonstrator which enables mobile client devices to locate and interact with services across multiple service location domains.
