Summary on Grant Application Form
Speech quality in telephony systems, such as in digital mobile radio terminals, hands-free telephones, telephony over personal computers which uses the Internet (VoIP) etc., are usually affected by back-ground noise and unwanted echo which is due to the coupling directly or through the surrounding surfaces between the microphone and the speakers. A novel technique based on voiced/unvoiced decision of speech (when mixed with noise) is proposed to enhance the speech quality by suppressing the background noise. This technique will suppress the noise in two stages by separating it into stationary and non-stationary parts and operate on each part with different methods which will enable enhancement without the well known musical noise artefacts. In parallel an acoustic echo canceller based on Normalised Least Mean Square (NLMS) principles will be developed with a view to adapt the filter coefficients even during the double talk times. This is necessary to improve the echo cancellation performance during long speech talkspurts. This is extremely important for mobile phone users since the echo path may vary quickly. The two algorithms (noise and echo canceller) will then be optimised jointly and integrated with two well known speech coders to demonstrate their effectiveness.
