The increasingly stringent regulations for emissions have led to the fitting of low Nox burners. These operate under lean burn conditions, increasing the need for better control over the air/fuel at the burners. If the fuel is coal, fuel/air is metered at the mixing point just after the mill. Fuel/air can be set accurately at the central metering point, however, differences in the routing of the lines injecting pulverised coal to the boilers and the inevitable phase maldistribution at the splitting point results in uneven feed to the boilers. This yields uneven combustion, increasing fuel costs, levels of carbon in the ash and other undesired emissions.Current methods used to improve fuel distribution to the burners have limited success. The aim is to have an on-line PF flow monitoring and control technique that allows the operator to tune fuel distribution.The project aims to develop instrumentation, suitable for operation on coal fired power plants, to monitor on-line the PF flow. Techniques to control the air/fuel through bifurcators and trifurcators wi be examined. The work will make use of a 1/3 scale purpose built rig and the instrumentation developed will be validated on it prior to full scale trials.
