Summary on Grant Application Form
Metal phosphides have important physical properties including hardness, wear resistance and reflectivity. Thin films of metal phosphides are difficult to prepare by CVD as current methods employ the use of toxic PH3. This proposal seeks to synthesise transition and main group metal phosphides by APCVD and aerosol assisted CVD using metal-phosphide precursors. The precursors will be tailored to include labile groups with a 'molecular-Achilles-heel' to promote formation of phosphide coatings. Metal phosphide coatings will also be obtained from reactions of PH2R and metal-halides under APCVD conditions. They physical properties of the metal phosphide coatings will be examined by XPS, XRD, FT-IR, Raman, sheet resistance, hardness measurements and SEM/EDX as appropriate. The potential of the films to act as 'solar control' coatings will be evaluated by reflectance/transmission measurements and as 'auto-cleaning' coatings by steric acid/UV tests.
