Reduction of particulate emissions from gasoline engines is becoming a major issue in future emission regulations. The proposed research programme is focused on methods to improve the trapping efficiency of the ultra fine particles in the exhaust system of gasoline engines through electrostatic, thermophoretic and centrifugal fields. In view of the urgency of the matter, computer models will be used to guide the relevant experiments and reduce the time required to manufacture prototype devices for trapping the particulates prior to their oxidation/burnout in the catalyst.
