Following on from our studies of metal thiosemicarbazide carboxylates, we plan to extend our programme on the hydrogen bond directed crystal engineering of metal complexes in two new directions.The first of these involves the incorporation of metal ions into guanidinium sulfonate sheets. In order to achieve this, we will use sulfonates that contain additional ligating groups. Two approaches will be followed (i) the preparation and characterisation of compounds such as guanidinium 3-pyridylsulfonate and diguanidinium 2,2'-bipyridyl-5,5'-disulfonate, and study of their interactions with metal ions, and (ii) the preparation of metal complexes of these sulfonates followed by metathesis with a guanidinium salt. In these ways we aim to prepare a wide range of metal-containing structures and use comparative analyses to gain insight into the influence of the metal centre on the supramolecular structure and its ability to incorporate guest molecules. The second area involves the study of complexes of 2,2'-bipyridyl-x,x'-dicarboxylic acid (x = 4 or 5) and their amides, which would be expected to self-assemble through hydrogen bonding between the acid or amide groups. The influence on the supramolecular structure of both metal and ligand geometry will be assessed, with a view to understanding the interplay between molecular and supramolecular structures.
