The next generation of computer speech systems for multi-media applications will integrate speaker-adaptive speech recognition with voice conversion and speech synthesis, and will be able to mimic a target voice, accent or state of emotion. An integrated high quality text to speech synthesis (TTS) and speech recognition system would have applications in extremely low bit rate speech coding, interpreted telephony, voice-interface to Internet via a mobile phone, and broadcast studio technology. The use of text to speech synthesis in a wider range of applications requires further advances in two specific areas; (a) improving the emotional expressiveness and prosodic aspects of synthesised speech and (b) making text to speech synthesisers voice-adaptive. By voice-adaptive we mean the ability of a synthesiser to assume the voice, the prosodic characteristics, the accent and the emotional state of a speaker. The aim of this proposal is to capitalise on two current PhD projects at Queens, one on trainable TTS and the other on speaker-adaptivespeech recognition, in order to develop an effective high quality TTS capable of mimicking a desired voice, accent or state of emotion.
