The project is in two parallel, linked, parts. Part 1 will be conducted by an RA working on objectives (1) and (2). starting from a low-order system, the adaptive MCS algorithm will be extended to chaotic dynamics using the system evolution along an attractor. Extended methods based on additional discontinuous switching action will also be studied. The Popov Criterion, Lyapunov methods and passivity theory will be used to study the stability and robustness of the resulting closed-loop systems. An alternative hybrid adaptive/OGY local strategy will also be investigated. The theory of normal form reduction to control the occurrence of local bifurcations, eg the Hopf bifurcation, will also be considered. A method of synthesising a local feedback controller will be sought, able to steer the system in a neighbourhood of the bifurcation point. Part 2 will be the responsibility of a PhD student, to address objectives (3) and (4). The student will also be involved with the work described above. A study of the effects and implementation of the controllers on aircraft models will be conducted. An aircraft simulation will be developed, allowing for the testing of different control strategies and generate error/state evolutions, adaptive gains, etc.
