Summary on Grant Application Form
The project would investigate the use of chromatically based intelligent monitoring and the evolution of an optoelectronic, hybrid command module to gather, store and relay power system information derived from a suite of chromatic optical fibre sensors. (Chromatic monitoring invloves cross correlating a signal with each of three processors having different overlapping responsivities to the signal variable, the simplest example of which is colour discrimination in optics). This would involve the design and testing of a remotely powered energy efficient, data economic hybrid module, the synergisation of a suite of chromatic optical fibre sensors, the chromatic compression of the sensor data for temporary storage by the module and the production of an optical fibre transmission link between the module and ground control which would be energy and data conservative. The module would be demonstrated on a high voltage circuit breaker for the early detection of incipient faults, increased periods between servicing and ease of interfacing with substation wide, data link protocols. The possibility of deploying the technology for more general monitoring equipment on a local Combined Heat and Power system will also be investigated as will the migration of the technology into.air~craft fuelling systems with a UK manufacturer
