Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research project combines experimental apparatus developed at University College London to produce high purity (> 90%) sources of aeronomic compounds with the intricate high resolution electron spectrometers available in the laboratory of Professor T D Mark, University of Innsbruck and surface science facilities in the laboratory of Professor E Illenberger, FREIE University, Berlin. The proposed experiments will study, for the first time:(i) Dissociative electron attachment from C120 and BrC1 at both high resolution (+20 meV) and at extremely low incident energies 310meV)(ii) Electron impact ionisation cross sections will be measured close to threshold for both the monomers and dimers of C120 using a new high resolution electron impact apparatus and (iii) Dissociative electron attachment processes from ozone and chlorine oxides absorbed on the surface of amorphous ice.The proposed programme is unique since it combines expertise and apparatus developed in three laboratories that is not readily available elsewhere and therefore will allow experiments to be performed that could not otherwise be undertaken by the individual groups.
