Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will develop and validate new methods for the analysis of loads applied to the femoral and acetabular components of hip joint prostheses. Recordings of directly measured joint contact forces from instrumented hip prostheses will be made simultaneously with recordings of limb motion and ground reaction forces using gait analysis apparatus specially adapted for a range of activities. The latter information will be used as input data to mathematical procedures which wil calculate muscle tension and hip joint contact forces. The results will be compared to the directly measured joint contact forces and the mathemtical procedures will be developed in order to produce physiologically validated joint contact forces. Thereafter, the most efficacious routine will be applied to existing gait analysis data from young and active hip joint replacement patients and will produce joint force spectra which can be used to design and test new devices for increased long term survivability of hip prostheses.
