Distortion of casting, or moulded components, is a highly complex phenomenon. Although, the governing physics is highly mathematical, the distortion problem is also geometry dependent. Conventional models, based on numerical techniques, simulate the physics, however, for 3D castings the computational cost is prohibitive. The project focused on the development and validation of a geometric reasoning technique to predict distorted casting shapes. The medial axis transformation technique will be used as it generates a unique tree-like skeleton of the given geometry. It also reduces the problem dimension eg medial object of a 3D casting is a 2D surface. It is proposed that in this research, a simple mathematical model would be developed to analyse the deformation of medial objects in order to predict casting distortion. The semi-empirical approach will consider heuristically based shrinkage rules to calculate forces resulting from differential cooling pattern, thermal contraction and solid fraction information to numerically predict the deformation behaviour of medial surfaces. The deformed medial surface shape would then be related to distorted 3D casting shapes.
