Summary on Grant Application Form
The research project proposed here investigates the application of UVGI for disinfecting MTB and other airborne pathogens in hospital buildings. The project will take 3 years to complete, and will involve complementary experimental work and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to be undertaken at the University of Leeds, and hospital-based field trial work. The project will be supported by a major UK UV lamp manufacturer; Hanovia Limited, and also by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust who have agreed to install prototype UV disinfection devices in ward treatment rooms for monitoring.Through a series of controlled laboratory and hospital experiments the research project will identify and quantify the physical criteria which govern the disinfection of MTB and other airborne pathogens by UVGI, with the overall aim of obtaining a greater understanding of the potential for UVGI disinfection in hospital buildings; and establishing guidelines and recommendations for the optimisation of UV disinfection devices in hospital buildings.
