We have discovered (1999) a new class of compound based on lithium polyhedra containing interstitial hydride. Such species are doubly unique: their structures are centred around alkali metal cages (cf., hitherto exclusively found rings) and they are the first molecular main group species incorporating interstitial hydride. Their syntheses, so far from reactions between (dimethyl) Al [N (2-Pyr) Ph] and BuLi (t, n, s) are repeatable and high yielding. It is proposed to extend and exploit these findings quickly and over several fronts. Firstly, we will investigate the discovered compounds further (by MAS NMR spectroscopy, neutron diffraction) and we will explore how and why they form [by mechanistic studies based on v.t. solution NMR spectroscopy, by ab initio MO calculations]. Secondly (but concurrently) we will seek further examples of such compounds by varying the precursors: changing the Group 1 (Li - Na, K) and Group 13 (Al - Ba, Ga, Tl ) elements, and changing the anion [bifunctional Ph (2-Pyr) N- thus far] attached to the Group 13 element (e.g., to a less delocalised amide anion, to analogous O-based anions). Such further examples will be structurally characterised as for the existing compounds. Finally, all such compounds will be tested as reducing agents over a range of conditions.
