Summary on Grant Application Form
Dr Zheng's expertise lies in the development of software, include MT3D, one of the most commonly used transport simulation packages. With Dr Zheng we intend explore hypotheses about the nature of biodegradation, by incorporating and testing the conceptual models within the MT3DMS/RT3D software family. Data is available from two sites: '4 Ashes' and 'Rexco', which differ in degradation patterns and reflect the complexity of natural attenuation processes.Dr Kueper has developed models of NAPL migration in fractured and/or porous media, as well as conducted experiments to determine their behaviour in the laboratory and field. The collaboration with him will involve further development of his FE model for DNAPL migration (to include 3D nonothogonal fractures) and applications to typical UK aquifers. This will involve work on grid generation, FE methods and efficient solution schemes and will link in with an existing project.Professor Frind is a very experienced mathematical modeller of processes such as reactive contaminant transport, geochemical reactions, and acid mine drainage. We wish to work with him on approaches to addressing the scale issues involved in moving from process models to performance models.
