Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent work has focused on complementing the narrow field of view offered by endoscopy with wide field of view MR imaging.Through this work, the group has recognised the potential and feasibility of high resolution 3D MR imaging at the instrument's location. The proposed project will investigate a new 3D imaging approach, which will be implemented using a novel combined MR imaging and tracking probe. The new approach will overcome many of the current limitations of minimal invasive imaging by a unique combination of concepts known from intravascular ultrasound, MR tracking and minimal invasive MR imaging.Endoscopy will be enhanced by not only providing a macroscopic view and instrument visualisation, but also extending the surgeon's view beyond immediate optical surfaces and/or through opaque fluids. Clinical risk may be significantly reduced and procedures simplified. The new concepts explored in this project are of fundamental relevance to the general field of minimal invasive MR imaging. They can be directly transferred to other areas of investigation, such as intravascular imaging. The proposed combined MR imaging and tracking probe may be readily mounted onto other devices, such as catheters.
