Summary on Grant Application Form
In order to use advanced model based control system design techniques one first needs a model of the system that is to be controlled. The field of system identification provides well established ways of mapping input/output data derived from experiments performed on a system into model of that system. However, if it is intended that the resulting model is only to be used for control system design, then the resulting system identification problem has some distinguishing features.Firstly, it is not necessary that the model accurately reproduces the open-loop behaviour of the plant. Indeed, it is clear from a classical point of view that the model need only be accurate around the desired crossover frequency. Secondly, it is possible using robust control techniques to design controllers which are guaranteed to give a certain level of performance over a whole set of plants. Hence, it would seem sensible to aim at identifying a set of models which is guaranteed to contain a model of the true plant rather than a single best guess .The aim of this proposal is to rigorously address both of these issues within a single framework, that of the nu-gap metric.
