Summary on Grant Application Form
Term rewriting systems (TRSs) are widely used throughout computer science as they form an abstract model of computation while retaining a relatively simple syntax and semantics. Modularity seeks criteria under which large TRSs inherit properties (eg confuence and strong normalisation) from their smaller (and hence easier to reason about) subsystems. Although many specific results are known, the relationships between them are not fully understood and several important open problems remain. The aim of this project is to develop a coherent framework explaining the relationships between current modularity results and, consequently, to extend them further. The potential benefits of this semantic approach are demonstrated by the prelimiary results we have already obtained and by the growing interest in our methods amongst the wider rewriting community. This aim will be achieved by extending our current research which is innovative in using a semantic approach to the problem. In particular, while traditional rewriting results are obtained using what may be described as a combinatorial analysis of residulas, we use category theory which provides a more succinct ontology with which to study rewriting.
