Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to develop a novel active element for use in transmissive, high resolution OASLM's. It will combine the highly anisotropic photoconduction of columnar discotic liquid crystals with the light modulating properties of nematic liquid crystals. It will have the advantages over most existing OASLM's of high transparency in the visible, very low charge spreading and very high resolution. These properties should allow such devices to find a key role in real time incoherent light converters, optical correlators, phase-conjugate mirrors, real-time holography, optical neural networks and especially projection displays. The components of the programme are i) synthesis of discotic liquid crystals; ii) photoconduction studies of discotic liquid crystals; iii) processing and characterisation of the hybrid liquid crystal films; iv) impedance matching of the hybrid liquid crystal films; v) electro-optical measurements of the calamitic liquid crystals; vi) device fabrication and characterisation. Keywords describing areas of proposalDiscotic, Calamitic, Liquid Crystal, OSLAM, High Resolution, Transmissive, Photoconductive
