Summary on Grant Application Form
Titania and metal-doped titania films will be prepared by atmospheric pressure vapour deposition (APCVD). The films will be grown on glass and ceramic substrates using volatile metal halides or metal ethoxides with co-reactant oxygen sources such as water or ethyl acetate. The elemental composition, thickness, porosity and microstructures of the films will be interrogated in detail by XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, electron probe, XPS and Raman measurements. The photocatalytic activity of the films to remove stearic acid, oleic acid and formaldehyde layers under different radiation will be examined. Corerelations will be made between photocatalytic activity and surface microstructure and composition. This will enable the APCVD reactions to be optimised to produce optically transparent, rugged films with photocatalytic activity.
