There is considerable uncertainty concerning the lateral stresses for which embedded retaining walls in an overconsolidated deposit must be designed, with the results of recent research providing conflicting but incomplete evidence. One reason for this is the absence of case records in which the behaviour of both the wall and the soil have been monitored continuously throughout all stages of construction and service.It is proposed to investigate this issue by means of a comprehensive programme of monitoring, back analysis and interpretation of the behaviour of the retaining walls for the cut-and-cover tunnel that will take the Channel Tunnel Rail Link under Ashford in Kent.A key aim of the proposed research is to link the behaviour of the wall to the state of the surrounding group during wall installation and construction and into the long term.A comprehensive back analysis will be undertaken using non-linear numerical soil models capable of modelling recent stress history. These analyses require advanced soil testing facilities to investigate the behaviour of the Atherfield and Weald Clays, with measurement of soil stiffness at very small strains and following stress paths similar to those induced by retaining wall behaviour.
