Low field, open magnet MRI is emerging rapidly as an attractive technique for clinical and non-clinical investigations. Image resolution, however, is condisered to be the major limitation of this technique and, as a result, pre-polarisation has been proposed as a method to improve image quality significantly. A small scale pre-polariser unit based on superconducting melt processed YBCO will be developed and evaluated under a MedLINK collaboration involving four U.K. and European companies, tow U.K. university and Imperial School of Medicine. The role of the IRC in Superconductivity (a sub-group of the Department of Engineering) will be to manufacture significant quantities of melt processed material, optimise its properties for this application and enable the transfer of technology to U.K. industry.
