Summary on Grant Application Form
Micromachined electromechanical systems (MEMS) are micron scale structures, produced on silicon by a variety of processing methods, that can produce small mechanical movement under electronic control. We propose to exploit this technology in novel ways to produce new microwave and millimetre wave components that possess agility. Specifically we will evolve and investigate new tunable filters, phase shifters and antennas, created by the integration of MEMS actuators with existing or new devices. Such components will be applicable to radar and communications systems, whe the high cost of conventionally produced devices prevents the realisation of the full range of agility needed in future designs.
