Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent EPSRC funding of `Liquefying Confining Gallium: a New Material for Photonics, has allowed us to develop a reserch program on the optically induced phase transition and associated nonlinear optical properties of this promising material structure. We now ask for funds which will allow us to extend our :research to electron-beam induced phase transitions in confining gallium by edding an electron gun to the deposition/spectroscopic chamber. The chamber upgarde will allow us to study the basic physical mechanisms of electron-beam-induced transitions in gallium nano-films. We will study the detailed dynamic properties of the transition for various excitation levels, sample thicknesses and temperatures. We will aim to build up a model for the ;observed behaviour, drawing extensively on the model developed so far for optically induced transitions. This will then allow informed decisions to be made on the feasibility of the application fo this effect in electro-optic devices.
