Summary on Grant Application Form
New concepts for the development of cycling systems for paraplegic persons are proposed. The project opens up a new area of research by proposing: (i) the development of high-level control strategies for integration of human cycling power and electric motor power; and (ii) the introduction of multivariable feedback control algorithms for both muscle stimulation and motor control. Both of these aspects will be tested in simulation using a dynamic model of the biomechanical-cycle system. Strategies for integration of the human and electric-motor systems will be experimentally tested in intact subjects using an instrumneted recumbent tricycle.
