Summary on Grant Application Form
We will measure the thermal conductivity of untwinned single crystals of yttrium-based high temperature superconductors, specifically Y-123 and Y-124. The Y-123 will be studied for a range of hole dopings, varied by appropriate oxygen annealing, in order to assess the effect of the normal state pseudo-gap and hole doping on the thermal conductivity. Comparison will be made between results for underdoped Y-123 and Y-124, in order to evaluate the effect of chain disorder on the thermal conductivity, and whether inter-layer couplings plays a role. Final tests and initial measurements will be made on a high field thermal conductivity system which is currently under development.
