Prof Uhlmann will work with Prof. Hench, the Directors of the Imperial College Centre for Tissue Engineering, and theofficers of the newly formed British Cell and Tissue Engineering Society to assess the current state of science and needs ofmaterials for use in tissue engineering (TE) and soft tissue repair. Scientific concerns that presently limit the clinical use ofTE constructs will be addressed, including: size, complexity, vascularization, sterilization and stability. The assessmentmethods will be: a critical review of the literature, interviews of UK and European investigators to compare approaches withTE teams in the U.S.A., and attendance at scientific meetings. The potential for molecular tailoring of nano-composites andhybrid bioactive inorganic polymeric materials specially designed for tissue engineering scaffolds and soft tissue repair willbe examined using Prof Uhlmann's extensive experience in creating this type of novel materials. He will be assisted bypostgraduates and postdoctoral students at Imperial College.
