Summary on Grant Application Form
Auctions involve competitive bidding among buyers and sellers of goods, and their provisioning places new demands from the underlying distributed computing infrastructure. The overall objective of this project is the development of a distributed systems architecture for dependable Internet based services for online competitive bidding, meeting the requirements of data integrity, responsiveness, fairness and scalability. The approach taken will be to replicate bidding services across globally distributed auction servers. Protocols for supporting various forms of bidding models will be developed. However, what types of bidding models can be supported over distributed auction services is very much an open issue.
