In its widest context this joint proposal between the Universities of Sheffield and Leicester is concerned with the development of novel recursive interlacing and higher order sliding mode control techniques which can be applied to nonlinear complex uncertain industrial processes which may be non-flat. At Sheffield, theoretical research will focus on the development of novel adaptive backstepping, recursive interlacing and passivity control techniques for uncertain nonlinear flat systems at singular points and non-flat systems. In undertaking the above studies new mathematical theory in areas such as nonlinear systems realisation, structural transformations of nonlinear differential systems, differential geometry and nonlinear systems stability theory will be developed. The applied research will focus on the production of a significant case study involving the control of non-flat systems. This is a particularly challenging application area since non-flat systems comprise those systems which cannot be linearised by static or dynamic feedback, and thus are not possible to control using standard nonlinear techniques.
