Summary on Grant Application Form
A fundamental study of the molecular factors influencing char formation in polymers subject to pyrolysis is proposed. In contrast to conventional studies in which only volatile products are studied, a unique combination of low field solid state 1 C NMR, in situ variable temperature solid state 1H NMR, electron spin resonance techniques allows the full and direct characterisation of char material, thus enabling a comprehensive model of char-forming chemistry to be constructed. The aim of the study is to establish the fundamental inter-relationships between polymer structure and char formation with a view to designing new fire retardant polymer systems.
