This proposal explores the use of new tied-back, soluble silica-like ligands to stabilise reactive lanthanide complexes. The novelty of our approach is to harness the 'chelate effect' in a durable disilanol ligand capable of supporting an open co-ordination site at a lanthanide - this approach has been designed to generate the first mononuclear models of surface supported lanthanide metals. We will use these to explore the transformations of small molecules that are catalysed by lanthanide-doped porous silicates, using readily available solution techniques. Additionally, the siloxane backbone will allow an easy entrance into co-ordination of a complementary transition metal through a bonded oxygen atom to afford a new class of functionalised lanthanide compounds. Heterobimetallic oxide-bridged europium-transition metal derivatives will be explored as potential binders of, and therefore selective sensors for, small polar molecules.
