Summary on Grant Application Form
The project seeks to correlate bioactivity and biocompatibility in Na/Ca/phospahte glasses and ceramics, with structure and phosphate speciation. The lead materials are the parent glasses doped with the structure modifying MgO and K20 which have displayed preliminary promising bioactivity. A range of glasses and derived ceramics will be prepared, doped with other structure modifying oxides (e.g. SiO2, ZnO, BaO, SrO, TiO2, etc.) and with fluoride. These materials will be subjected to extensive bioactivity and biocompatabilty testing, and those giving favourable responses will be structurally characterised using a range of physico-chemical techniques - principally solid state NMR, X-Ray powder diffraction and EXAFS. The determination of the phosphorus speciation in the amorphous glasses may be assisted by studies on the more amenable crystalline derived ceramics. A key feature of the programme will be to explore the extent to which structure in the ceramic may be used to model short range structure in the parent glass.
