Summary on Grant Application Form
We request funding for two argon ion lasers (one from JREI, one from Unilever, at 40k each) to be used in our five-year-old two-colour dynamic light scattering (TCDLS) equipment. TCDLS is a technique which suppresses multiple scattering. It thus allows interpretable light scattering data of high precision to be obtained from optically turbid samples, greatly extending the range of materials that can be studied. Our research to date has provided important new information on the structure and dynamics of several colloidal and polymeric systems. Overall the equipment works well, but has the drawback that variations in the pointing angles of the laser beams necessitate frequent adjustment of the equipment by an expert. The lasers requested in this proposal have active cavity stabilisation, providing specified beam pointing stability of <5 rad. With this upgrade, the equipment should remain in full alignment for long periods, allowing TCDLS to become an almost routine technique with much wider usage. We outline a programme of research covering sample characterisation, and a range of problems in fundamental and applied colloid and polymer science.
