Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the programme is to derive an understanding of structural effects in the ion exchange behaviour of framework materials. Such materials are of considerable importance directly as ion exchangers but also indirectly in their ion exchanged forms as catalytic materials. A full range of structural investigation methods probing structure during the ion exchange process (in situ) and in isolated materials (ex situ) will be used. Information derived will delineate the framework changes, ion distribution variations and influence of solvent molecules (mainly water) which occur during the ion exchange process providing a full understanding (together with theoretical models - e.g. dielectric theory) of the ion exchange process. This information will be used to influence project elements directed at controlling ion exchange behaviour in terms of regeneration and developing high specificities. The ion exchange behaviour of framework structures to a range of ions including lithium and transition metals will be studied as part of this programme.
