Summary on Grant Application Form
The instrument requested will replace our existing diffractometer which serves as an essential part of the research effort of a number of groups within the School of Chemistry. The research areas which rely on powder X-ray diffraction as the main technique for the characterisation new materials include the solid state synthesis of novel ternary nitrides and sulfides, the development new emission control catalysts (in conjunction with the Nottingham Trent University), new materials from supercritical fluids and the synthesis of molecular precursors for multicomponent nitrides. Almost every other research group in the School also uses powder X-ray diffraction as part of their materials characterisation programme. The new diffractometer will produce data of much higher Quality, increase the rate of data collection and enable data collection at high temperatures for kinetic Studies.
